Hot97 DJs Poo Poo on Bambaataa Protesters During Christmas Eve Marathon

Funkmaster Flex Brags On Bambaataa Pic and Big Up’s Zulu Nation

New York – During a Christmas Eve Marathon on New York radio station Hot97, Funkmaster Flex, Red Alert and Chuck Chillout publicized the December 22, 2018 event at SOB’s with no mention of the Bambaataa protesters or the allegations of child sexual abuse. The top tier DJ Funk Flex gave a shout out to Afrika Bambaataa and bragged about his controversial photo with him.

Afrika Bambaataa was billed to host a December 22, 2018 party at Sounds of Brazil (SOB’s) until the club was barraged with phone calls, emails, and social media posts. The club canceled Bambaataa’s appearance within 24 hours. On the date of the Saturday night party, a protest organized by the Gathering of Christ Church (GOCC) had nearly 200 people in place outside of SOB’s in order to send a message that members of the public object to Bambaataa being booked anywhere in the city (see video).

Although Bambaataa was no longer scheduled to host the event, he arrived at the club on the night of the party and was denied entry at the door. Reports say that members of his entourage went inside, caused a bit of a ruckus, and stopped Funkmaster Flex from DJ’ing. Flex later posted an awkward picture with Bambaataa on his Instagram saying they were “partying on Varick” even though the photo was clearly taken outside. SOB’s address is 204 Varick Street. Funk Flex soon disabled the comments on the Instagram photo.

On Christmas Eve, Flex, Red Alert and Chuck Chillout hosted a marathon on Hot97 where they describe the SOB’s party as, “over kinda fast,” lending credence to reports that he was forced to stop spinning. Flex can also be heard big upping Afrika Bambaataa while making no mention of the protesters or the backlash he has received since posting the photo. The audio of their discourse is around 38:00 – 41:00. (see player below)

Flex also took shots at Ronald “Bee Stinger” Savage. Savage grew up in the Zulu Nation and publicly accused Bambaataa of molesting him when he was a minor. Audio of Flex discussing Ron Savage can be heard around the 11:04 mark in the video below.
